Tim Tebow is a free agent, but that is over now, as the New England Patriots decided to take a chance on the quarterback and brought him in on a contract after the New York Jets signed him and now Bill Belcihick has stuck it to the New York Jets and they will have the chance to embarrass them even further when they play against each other and he uses Tebow was better than the Jets ever did.
With everyone in NFL circles talking about his future in the league or lack thereof, it makes one wonder what would have happened if the quarterback was dealt to the Jacksonville Jaguars rather than the New York Jets after starring with the Denver Broncos in the 2011 season.
Although the trade to the Jets looked complete when reports first came about it, later on it was revealed that Tebow may have had the chance to select between the Jets and the Jaguars and clearly after the way the 2012 season went, his choice was a mistake. Tebow took over the Broncos after Kyle Orton went 1-4 and he ended up going 7-4 while bringing the team to the playoffs after winning a division title. After leading the team to a win over the Steelers in overtime, he was eventually traded when the Broncos went after future Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning.
The Jets saw Tebow defeat them during that season and they brought him over to much fanfare and excitement, but the play on the field for the quarterback was nothing like that. Rex Ryan and the team constantly said they had a plan and a way for Tebow to get involved in the offense that wouldn't hurt Mark Sanchez, but instead the exact opposite of that happened. The team used Tebow mostly as a blocker and decoy and when he wasn't on the field, the media constantly hounded him and the team as to why.
Things descended into a circus for the Jets during the season and Tebow ended up being another one of the team's scapegoats for their foundational issues as a franchise, much like Eric Mangini, Mike Tannenbaum and players like LaDanian Tomlinson were in the past. Tebow was left without a role on a team that didn't want him and now that he is a free agent, the media hype and the craziness involving his play on the field has kept him from getting a new job. He has had offers from the CFL, AFL and even from Glenn Beck, but so far he has yet to make a decision. Reports came out that people in his camp think his career in the NFL is over, but his father refuted those reports.
The Jaguars went just 2-14 last season and although Chad Henne was solid in place of an injured Blaine Gabbert, one wonders what Tebow could have done, as he rushed for just 102 yards and passed for 39 while with the Jets in a wasted role. The team had some awful stretches while winning just two games, having one seven game losing streak and a five game losing streak to end the season and after the numbers by Gabbert, there is a good chance that Tebow would have been able to help improve the team. Gabbert passed for 53 yards in one game and had too many turnovers, while the team ranked 21st in passing and 30th in rushing yards per game.
Tebow had success with the Broncos and he would have been able to at least give the Jaguars some hope for the season and possible a better record than 2-14. He had a six game winning streak while with the Broncos and he led the team to last second victories and comebacks against the Jets and the Dolphins before leading the team against the Steelers. Tebow would have been an upgrade at quarterback and had the trade went through he may still be in the league.
