Tim Tebow is now a New England Patriot and while Bill Belichick is laughing at his division rival New York Jets for never figuring out how to use him, the team is preparing to have him in minicamp after he was brought in on a two year contract that has no guaranteed money.
According to ESPN.com, the Patriots signed Tebow to a two-year deal with no guaranteed cash and that he will play quarterback for the Patriots, meaning he will likely be third string behind Ryan Mallett on the depth chart behind Tom Brady. There was speculation that Tebow would be used as a tight end after injuries to Rob Gronkowski over the year, but that appears to be off the table.
Tebow comes to the Patriots after a terrible year with the Jets, but that was not really his fault. Tebow was traded to the Jets after starring with the Broncos and the move to New England reunites him with the old coach that drafted him in Denver in Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. Tebow took over a 1-4 team in Denver and led the team to seven wins over the final 11 games to get to the playoffs, where he defeated the Steelers before losing to the Patriots he now plays for.
During that time he completed just 46.5 percent of his passes and he eventually was gone after previously being selected with the 25th pick in 2010, as the Broncos brought in Peyton Manning on a five-year, $96 million contract. During his time playing under McDaniels the previous season before John Fox took over, Tebow had 654 yards with five touchdowns and three interceptions while rushing for 227 yards and six touchdowns and now he has the chance to contribute again, but he obviously will not start.
Tebow was released by the Jets last month after the draft was over and after getting some random offers from the AFL, CFL and other small leagues, he has a new home in Massachusetts, at least for now. Belichick likely wanted to stick it to the media a bit as well as his division rivals in the New York Jets, but he also likely saw a player he could use and mold into a Swiss army knife type and he could be the one to have the last laugh after the Jets limited him to just 102 yards rushing and 39 yards passing last season in what was mostly a disaster.
