By now if you haven't heard that former Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow has signed with the New England Patriots, then that must be one big rock you've been sleeping under.
Tebow has been given a chance by Bill Belicheck and the Patriots, and according to former Heisman Trophy winner and Carolina Panthers quarterback Chris Weinke, the Patriots will be very pleased with the quarterback that they now possess.
USA Today is reporting that Weinke, who has spent the last month tweaking Tebow's mechanics, says he's convinced that the unorthodox backup won't have to change positions to stick in the Patriots.
"Do I think he can play the quarterback position in the NFL? Yeah, no question,'' Weinke told USA TODAY Sports Monday. "Like I told Tim when I found out (Monday) that he signed, 'You're locked and loaded, ready to go.''
Weinke added:
"Tim's about as competitive a guy as you're ever going to be around,'' Weinke said. "Tim didn't spend any time talking about the Jets releasing him. But at the end of the day, he's been humbled and he's hungry.
"That's good. He'll go up to New England. And they'll be pleased with the way he's throwing the football."
Belichick spoke highly of Tebow and has remained to have great insight dating back to Tebow's days has the Florida Gators starter, where he was coached by Urban Meyer, one of Belichick's trusted friends and business partners.
There's also the connection Tebow has with new Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, who traded three draft picks in order to select Tebow in the first round when he was coach of the Denevr Broncos.
Weinke said he believes pressure on Tebow will be minimal with Tom Brady as the starter, and with McDaniels role of Patriots offensive coordinator.
"It's an ideal, no-nonsense environment,'' Weinke said. "He wants to get much better. He grasped and had a great understanding of what's going on and that, coupled with the familiarity with Josh McDaniels ... he's going to a place where we all know they have one of the best quarterbacks in the game in Tom Brady.
"So there won't be pressure to go in there to try to get a starting job.''
