The saga of where Tim Tebow will sign as a free agent is now over, as the quarterback has agreed to a two-year deal with the New England Patriots and head coach Bill Belichick, who has said he plans to use Tebow at his natural position.
One thing Tebow will be without though is hit natural number, as number 15 is already taken by Ryan Mallett. According to Pro Football Talk, the backup quarterback has the number and Tebow's available options include 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, and 9. It notes that he previously wore number five in high school, but that number has been given to backup kicker David Ruffer, so possibly at some point he may get that depending on who sticks around after minicamp.
Once cuts are made more numbers will be available and while it doesn't make much of a difference, he did sell a number of jerseys with the Jets with number 15, which is why the team traded for him in the first place, since it couldn't possibly have been about football the way they used him. Mallett isn't going anywhere since Belichick likes his work ethic and he has been a good soldier and it also is because the head coach values draft picks and he used one on the backup.
Reports say that Tebow will be used at quarterback during minicamp and that could extend into the season if he makes the team and Belichick likely will use him against the Jets when the two teams play this season as a way to stick it to his division rivals. Tebow worked in the offseason with Chris Weinke and that seems to have helped sway Belichick and now he has a place in the NFL in the immediate future. Tebow showed some flashes with the Broncos and Belichick will be tapping into that as he tries to figure out how to use him in the offense.
