The Brooklyn Nets made a big splash with their new coaching hire, as they brought in former NBA and team point guard Jason Kidd to be the new coach, but that move is not without its risks, as he is untested as a coach and has no experience apart from his playing career.
According to ESPN.com, Kidd is also still dealing with a DWI that started back when he was arrested for drunk driving in the Hamptons. The pending court case is in New York and the case is scheduled for June 20. Kidd pleaded not guilty to the chargers of misdemeanor DWI and the case is in Suffolk County and that is where prosecutors confirmed the date for the court at Southampton Town Court on June 20.
Kidd will not be attending that court date and his attorney Edward Burke Jr. said that it was due to the fact that a number of legal motions have not yet been decided in the case. At the time, Kidd crashed into a pole and veered off into the woods last July and then came out to apologize on Twitter. The misdemeanor could give him a year in jail, but that is not expected to happen.
Kidd is taking over the Nets from PJ Carlesimo, who took over for Avery Johnson and he will inherit a 49-33 team that lost to the Chicago Bulls in the playoffs this season. The team made a hard push for Dwight Howard when he was traded and there is a good chance that the team will try to sign him, although the Rockets and Mavericks are the two teams that have been rumored to be the top options for Howard.
The Nets are an attractive team, especially with their new coach, as they have an All-Star point guard in Deron Williams as well as a number of other players on the roster that could contend for a top playoff spot. Kidd is coming to the team without any major coaching experience and he once turned around the Nets as a player and now he will have to do it as a head coach and the Russian billionaire owner got what he wanted in a splashy hire, but depending on what happens there is chance that Kidd could end up on the outs when it's all said and done.
