The Tampa Bay Rays had a scary moment on Saturday as pitcher Alex Cobb was hit in the head with a line drive against the Kansas City Royals after Eric Hosmer hit a liner and he remained on the group for some time before being taken off on a stretcher to the hospital.
According to ESPN.com, Cobb was hit in the right ear by a line drive from Hosmer and immediately trainers from both teams attended to him before he was taken off the field. He was kicking his legs while being looked at on the mound and he was taken to the hospital after the scary injury. He tweeted about the injury and thanked everyone for their prayers for him and David Price said he was in good spirits afterwards.
The scary injury quieted the entire crowd and the Rays ended up winning 5-3 and Joe Maddon spoke about the injury, saying it was a bad moment. The ball bounced off Cobb and went o catcher Jose Lobaton who was able to make the out at first. Royals manager Ned Yost said it was too fast for Cobb to react and the play made a very loud sound that could be heard around the stadium and the game was delayed for over 10 minutes. The players on the field were nervous and the hit to Cobb's head came the same week that his grandmother passed away.
The play came a month after JA Happ was hit in the head for the Blue Jays and that came after Brandon McCarthy suffered an injury with the A's last year and now it has become even more pronounced, as he suffered a seizure in a restaurant and passed out while with his wife. McCarthy had a scary injury and had life threatening injuries afterwards and had a skull fracture and brain contusion. Baseball has been looking at the head injuries for some time and is looking for ways to protect pitchers, but so far they have done nothing and when a pitcher dies or ends up getting brain damage from a play, it will be too late.
