As the NBA Finals rages on between the San Antonio Spurs and Miami Heat, rumors of blockbuster coaching moves were all fans could talk about over this past weekend.
Early Sunday, as whispers of a Boston Celtic trade, that included Doc Rivers and a package of players, to the Los Angeles Clippers swirled, talks of Chicago Bulls' Tom Thibodeau being Rivers' replacement spread like wild fire.
However, according to an NBA source the Celtics have no plans to pursue Thibodeau because they know the Bulls will not grant permission to speak to the former Celtics assistant coach.
"He's loved in Boston, but he's loved a little more by Chicago,'' the source said.
Thibodeau is a native of Connecticut and has strong ties in the New England area. However, him returning to the Celtics is nothing but a fun idea as the Bulls just rewarded him with a nice raise when he signed a four-year contract extension that will earn him $17.5 million over the next four seasons.
As for Rivers and the Celtics, there's now a chance that he can leave the Celtics bench in order to further pursue a broadcasting career.
Rivers has been among the most respected and well-liked coaches in the NBA for many years now. On more than one occasion he stated that he would consider taking a sabbatical from coaching in order to recharge as well as spend more time with his family.
