With great success comes great responsibility and Johnny Manziel continues to learn that lesson the hard way. The Texas A&M star quarterback continues to find himself in deep trouble with his actions. After bursting onto the college football scene, the media is watching Manziel's every move and he has yet to figure out how to control that.
The Heisman Trophy winner made headlines after tweeting, "I can't wait to leave College Station." He then immediately deleted the tweet, back peddling on his words. He quickly wrote back, "Don't forget that I love A&M with all my heart, but please please walk a day in my shoes." Someone cannot handle the fame. What gets put out on the Internet, stays on the Internet and now Manziel has some explaining to do.
On damage control, the quarterback has since discussed the tweet with A&M football coaches. According to Texas sources, Manziel has apologized to Aggies' coaches, realizing he should not have tweeted out his unhappiness. Coaches were reportedly concerned and reached out to make sure everything was ok. Head coach Kevin Sumlin is no stranger to the fame that can come to success and he is seeing firsthand that it is tough for players to deal with.
"I've seen it, just like everybody else. I think being around other guys in the past has helped me, but there's never been anything like this before. Being around Adrian Peterson or Jason White or Sam Bradford or Case Keenum or Drew Brees, people like that, that's part of the deal. When you are a nationally recognized person, whether you're young or a freshman or an older guy there are some things that come with that," Sumlin said.
Manziel will be eligible to enter into the NFL after the end of the upcoming football season. The deleted tweet has only fueled speculation that Manziel will indeed exit early for the professional leagues. He can still play in the NCAA for three more seasons, but his draft stock is not getting any higher and if he has a repeat season of the success 2012 had, Manziel will likely be the top player drafted.
The quarterback vowed to exit Twitter back in March after telling ESPN that social media was an unnecessary distraction. He then returned to the platform in April to his now over 360,000 followers. It might be time for Manziel to delete his account for good.
