San Francisco 49ers Rumors: Vernon Davis Now Wide Receiver After Michael Crabtree Injury as Colin Kaepernick Works on Chemistry with Veteran

The San Francisco 49ers' season has just begun and already they are dealing with the loss of one of their biggest play makers. Wide receiver Michael Crabtree went down with a torn Achilles following the team's first round of organized team activities, leaving San Francisco short on passing threats. As the team continues to figure out a plan to replace Crabtree, they are moving players around to fill the void. As a result, tight end Vernon Davis is now playing exclusively as a wide receiver during minicamp.

The 49ers think David could be a solid replacement while Crabtree recovers. A time table for the receiver's return is unknown after he underwent surgery to repair the tear. For now, David will lineup in his spot. As the team begins a mandatory minicamp, Davis will remain practicing with the receiving group until the team can think of another option.

Davis has certainly shown that he can look the part of a wide receiver. Prior to being drafted in 2006, Davis ran a 4.38 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine. He has the top end speed to play outside and he has the large frame to fight off defenders. With the loss of Crabtree and the departure of Anquan Boldin, the 49ers need Davis help be a threat.

Davis had 41 catches for five touchdowns in 2012 and he can expect a lot more in the upcoming season. While he is not concerned with overall numbers, he is working overtime to build a better rapport with quarterback Colin Kaepernick. The two are working to build better on-field chemistry that was inconsistent last season.

"We bond really well. We play, we joke away from the field. That's very important, especially when it comes to having a relationship with your quarterback. You want to be able to joke with this guy. It's about what you do away from here. Colin and I are going to work on the field but how's your relationship away from the field. It's always been good.

The 49ers have two young tight ends in Garrett Celek and Vance McDonald that are expected to help fill roles in the position. As David remains a wide receiver, the two young players will pick up the slack. Davis believes they both have the size and speed to be productive.

David is keeping a team-first attitude in minicamp. If the coaching staff wants to keep him at wide receiver then he will stay there. He believes all he can do is just to come out and perform on the field.
