It is safe to assume that not every Dallas Cowboys' fan loves quarterback Tony Romo. While the veteran has shown a strong amount of upside, it has been overshadowed by the lack of success he has brought towards the Cowboy's organization. The quarterback has won just one playoff game since becoming the starter in Dallas, not earning himself a lot of support. While Romo might not have all the fans on his side, one NFL legend is saying the team is lucky to have him at quarterback.
Former Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach made an appearance on a local radio station to praise Romo and his efforts, considering him a "championship quarterback."
"I'm a Tony Romo fan..." Staubach said. "I think Tony Romo is a championship quarterback. He can take a team to a championship. He can't do it by himself, but I really believe he can do it. I just see what he does on the field, the plays he makes, the throws he makes, the sense that he has to move in the pocket so I'm pulling really hard for Tony because I really believe he is one heck of a quarterback, and that's a feeling from somebody that didn't say that about any other quarterbacks except for Troy Aikman. I think Tony is the right quarterback, and we're lucky to have Tony Romo."
At least Romo has some praise being thrown his way. Lately the quarterback has been the brunt of media criticism ever since signing his new contract extension. Even owner Jerry Jones is speaking out critically against his quarterback. Romo understands that the new contract brings raised expectations, but he also knows the media does not matter.
"None of it matters. It's going to be player out on the field, no matter what we're going to do we have to open up the football season against the New York Giants and whether you said great things or where you said the Cowboys are whatever, they're the best ever, the worst ever, they can't ever, the can, it doesn't matter. You still have to show up and you got to play," Romo said.
The heat is on Romo to perform. Jones is expecting big results from the quarterback in hopes of achieving postseason dreams. Last season, the Cowboys came within a game of making the playoffs and they are hoping to get into a better situation in 2013.
