Tiger Woods did not play his best at the U.S. Open this past weekend and one reason why may have been an elbow injury and that will cause the number one golfer in the world to rest until the next major in the British Open.
According to ESPN.com, Woods will not play until the British Open in a few weeks to give himself some rest and to heal up his left elbow strain. Woods said on Wednesday that doctors found the injury and he felt it was best for him to rest until the Open, even though he will miss the AT&T National next week at Congressional, even though he is the defending champion. The tournament benefits his foundation and he said that after being examined from doctors, he realized that it was best to rest and get right for the next major.
Woods' major drought now is on another tournament and he has yet to win once since the US Open back in 2008 and many have been surprised by his play of late after starting the year so well. He won four times on tour this year already, more than any other player and he played horribly at Merion, shooting a 13 over for the tournament to finish way back of Phil Mickelson and winner Justin Rose.
It was the worst score for Woods at the US Open and during the tournament he appeared that he injured his arm, but he said that he was fine and an injury was not an issue. He last won the Players Championship in May and now will focus on winning the British Open. Woods said it was tough to sit out of the tournament that he sponsors and that he said he will still attend to give support.
The British Open starts July 18-21 at Muirfield.
"I was examined after I returned home from the U.S. Open, and the doctors determined I have a left elbow strain," Woods said. "I have been advised to take a few weeks off, rest and undergo treatment. I'll be ready to go for the British Open, and I'm looking forward to playing at Muirfield."
