Spain continued their unbeaten run in the Confederations Cup with a comfortable 3-0 win over Nigeria, while Uruguay confirmed their place in the semifinals courtesy an 8-0 mauling of Tahiti.
The World and European champions got two of their goals from an unlikely source - left-back Jordi Alba - with Fernando Torres again finding the back of the net.
"This is clearly new to me," Alba told FIFA's official website on scoring a brace. "Particularly because of the quality of the forwards in this squad.
"If it's odd for me to score just one -- of course I'm pleased, but I'm also happy we kept a clean sheet and beat a team like Nigeria, who made life difficult for us for the whole 90 minutes.
"The first goal was a normal move, because I went up the flank and the pass by Andres (Iniesta) invited me to cut inside. Then I got a bit of luck with a rebound and managed to tuck it away with my left foot.
"For the second goal I noticed that they (Nigeria) had switched off and so I didn't come back to my normal position.
"(David) El Guaje Villa then played a phenomenal pass to me. I controlled it well and, after going round the keeper, I just had to knock it into the net with my right foot."
Spain now face Italy in the semifinals in a replay of the Euro 2012 final, while Uruguay take on hosts Brazil, who are riding high after winning all three of their group games.
Abel Hernandez was the main man for Uruguay against the minnows Tahiti, scoring four goals, with Luis Suarez adding a brace. Diego Perez and Nicolas Lodeiro got a goal apiece as Uruguay posted the second biggest win in Confederations Cup history - the biggest was garnered by Spain, when they beat Tahiti 10-0 again a few days ago.
"I've never scored four goals in the first team (at club level), less with the national team," Hernandez told Ovacion Digital.
"I'm happy, it's a tremendous joy personally, especially since I got it with the Uruguayan national team shirt.
"At every opportunity I have attempted to show what I can do on the pitch. I hope to continue. Now we have to think about Brazil.
"Brazil is a great team that has very good players. We also have a lot of quality players and we will show what we can give."
Brazil take on Uruguay in the first semifinal in Belo Horizonte on Wednesday, with Spain looking to top Italy again a day later in Fortaleza.
