New England Patriots star Aaron Hernandez has been arrested in connection with the murder of 27-year-old Odin Lloyd and now that the police have taken him into custody, the team has decided to release him soon after giving him a lucrative contract extension.
According to ESPN.com, Hernandez was released soon after the arrest and the team initially put the news on Twitter before releasing an official statement, saying that they felt it was the right thing to do. Hernandez was implicated in the case and investigated for his connection to Lloyd, who was seen with the tight end on the night of the murder. He is connected through his girlfriend and the mother of his child Shayanna Jenkins, as her sister Shanea dated Lloyd.
Police searched the home of Hernandez multiple times as well as the area around the mansion and after bringing in evidence they arrested him, although charges were not made public. It is likely obstruction of justice, as the tight end apparently destroyed his cell phone and home security system before police could see them. He also hired a cleaning crew for his home on Monday and now he is in custody and charges will be released when he appears in court.
The police have said that Lloyd was shot multiple times and that he was killed where the body was found in an industrial park a mile from the home. Hernandez has had his past scrutinized, including failed drug tests in college and gang ties and now his NFL future is in question as he is brought in to custody.
Reports conflicted about the arrest and now the team and the league will wait and see what the charges are. He was cuffed before 9 am and taken out by police in red shorts and a white shirt and his tattoos were visible as he was taken away. Shanea Jenkins and Odin Lloyd were dating when he was murdered and her reportedly mentioned he was driving with Hernandez in a text the night of the murder. Jenkins is the sister of Aaron Hernandez's girlfriend and that is one place where the police started the connection.
