Aaron Hernandez was released by the New England Patriots on the day he was arrested and after being placed on waivers, he made it through successfully with no team trying to claim him, meaning he is technically a free agent, although he won't be playing in the NFL anytime soon.
According to Pro Football Talk, Hernandez was placed on waivers after he was released by the Patriots and cleared his way through and now is a man without a team and a home, as he is in jail waiting for the trial in the murder of Odin Lloyd. None of the 31 teams in the NFL were expected to claim him and now technically he is not an employee of the league. The report said that the league wouldn't take action on Hernandez or a team that gives him a contract until the time comes and the trial finishes.
The NFL said that teams will face a hearing after the resolution of the charges pending against Hernandez and the hearing would be to see if the players should face a suspension or other actions. Hernandez was arrested and arraigned on Wednesday and he recently signed a five year extension worth over $40 million that is now done with and the Patriots likely will get money back from him later on.
On top of that, he is now being investigated in a second murder, a double homicide from Boston last year that involved a silver SUV. Police impounded a car Hernandez has with Rhode Island plates in connection with the murder and that could be tied in later. Lloyd supposedly is connected to that case as well, which involved three victims of a shooting in July in which two people died. The case was made public recently and now Hernandez will be facing questions in that as well.
The details of the case are unclear, but Hernandez has been looked at as the orchestrator of the murder of Lloyd and the prosecution has text messages and video evidence as well as shell casings and ammo that can be tied to him. He was looked at as one of the best young players in the NFL and after having some troubles in college at Florida, he will be a cautionary tale for the NFL for ages.
