NBA Free Agency Signings: Lakers Agree To Sign Center Chris Kaman

Jul 08, 2013 04:39 PM EDT

The Los Angeles Lakers have agreed to terms to sign free agent center Chris Kaman on a one-year deal, according to sources with knowledge of the deal.

Sources told ESPN.com that the Lakers pressed hard to complete a deal with Kaman over the weekend to ensure they have a quality starting center in the wake of Dwight Howard's departure without impacting their projected 2014 salary-cap space.

Kaman, who played for the Dallas Mavericks last season, averaged 10.5 points and 5.6 rebounds in 20 minutes per game.

Prior to playing for the Mavs, Kaman averaged 13.1 points and 7.7 rebounds in 47 games with the New Orleans Hornets. He played the first eight seasons of his career with the Los Angeles Clippers, and was an All-Star in 2010.

Kaman has been prone to injuries. He was limited to 32 games in 2010-11 because of problems with his back, left ankle and right knee. A strained arch in his left foot contributed to him playing only 31 games two seasons before that.

Another name that the Lakers reportedly have interest in is free agent Elton Brand.

Brand can prove useful for the Lakers  despite appearing as a less than attractive option. If he fits their financial obligations he could be a very useful pickup.
