ATP Rankings: Nadal Higher Rank than Federer Despite Early Elimination from Wimbledon 2013

Jul 09, 2013 02:16 PM EDT

Here's a sight many didn't expect to witness, Roger Federer has dipped to 5th overall in the ATP Rankings after his second round elimination at Wimbledon 2013. To the surprise of some, Rafael Nadal is in fourth place, ahead of Federer. Here are the top ranked players and their latest runs as Men's tennis gets ready to move West and prepares for the 2013 U.S. Open.

(1) Novak Djokovic
He might have lost at the 2013 Wimbledon finals, but he started the year off in great fashion by winning the Australian Open. He was also the runner-up at the 2012 U.S. Open. Grand slam tournaments award players the most points and Djokovic has made 13 consecutive semifinals appearances at Majors.

(2) Andy Murray
What a way to end a drought. Though many questioned his ability to perform with the top ranked dogs like Djokovic and former No.1 Federer, Murray has placed himself right near the top of the rankings after making the finals four straight grand slam tournaments he played in. He wasn't at the 2013 French Open, but he played at the Men's Singles Finals at the 2012 Wimbledon, won the 2012 U.S. Open, lost in the Finals against Djokovic at the 2013 Australian Open and then finally accomplished a dream by winning the 2013 Wimbledon title and bringing the cup back to Great Britain.

(3) David Ferrer
He has not won a grand slam title in his career, but he is playing deeper in tournaments. Ferrer has made seven consecutive quarterfinal appearances in grand slam tournaments. He was even the runner-up at the 2013 French Open where he lost to Rafael Nadal.

(4) Rafael Nadal
Speaking of the devil, Nadal has worked his way back from injury, highlighted by capturing his record setting eighth French Open title. He was bounced early in the first round at Wimbledon 2013. However, he remains in the top 10 and surpassed one of his long time rivals.

(5) Roger Federer
Maybe he should have retired while on top, but there is not doubt that Federer can still play at a high level. It was surprising to see the Swiss get bounced in the second round while at Wimbledon; his most successful major. Federer has won at the All England Club seven times in his career, but he couldn't make it eight. Dating back to 2004, Federer had made 36 consecutive quarterfinal appearances at grand slam tournaments. He was one of the most dominant players while that streak lasted. Now, it appears as though other younger players are taking over this generation of tennis.
