The Jacksonville Jaguars have several questions that need to be answered when training camp begins at the end of July. With new pieces on the offensive line and rookies fielding the secondary unit, the team has a lot to work. One main area of focus for the Jaguars will surround the quarterback play. While Blaine Gabbert is the assumed and extremely likely starting quarterback, Chad Henne is a talented backup and could see some significant playing time.
Training camp is extremely crucial for Gabbert. The Jaguars opted to not draft a quarterback this year, instead putting their trust in the third year player to make a leap into becoming a true quarterback of the league. The Jaguars will be instilling a new offense from a new coach and it is imperative that Gabbert proves he can pick things up quickly and adapt. If Gabbert plays poorly, there is a line of young guys ready to step up.
The backup position for the Jaguars is equally as important as the play of Gabbert. The team is preparing themselves just in case the starter cannot seem to improve this season. Henne and Mike Kafka appear to be in a battle to earn the No. 2 spot on the team. Henne certainly has a large amount of experience on the field. He was a starter for two years in Miami. At this point, Henne has the leg up, but Jordan Rodgers and Matt Scott will make sure they are not forgotten in the discussions.
Outside of the quarterback play, the secondary will be a real battle. Jacksonville has two rookies looking to field the unit but that could prove extremely risky. Alan Ball is the likely No. 1 starting cornerback with rookie Dwayne Gratz hoping to start alongside him. The team could also turn to Dwight Lowery to pair up on the field as well. Josh Evans could be the favorite to start at safety but Jonathan Cyprien is already winning coaches over, possibly putting him in the lead for the spot.
The entire Jacksonville team is very young with very few veterans to help provide needed guidance to get through the team's transition. The Jaguars will head into camp on July 26 with many rookies looking to prove their worth and two quarterbacks trying to cement themselves as the team's starter.
