An apologetic Florida Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen faced the media in Miami after the team suspended him for five games following controversial comments regarding Cuban dictator Fidel Castro.
"I am here to say I am sorry with my heart in my hands and I want to say I'm sorry to all those people who are hurt indirectly or directly," Guillen said according ESPN's Spanish translation.
"The interpretation didn't come out as I wanted," Guillen explained, "I was thinking in Spanish and I said the wrong thing in English."
Previously, Guillen had told Time magazine that he loves Castro and respects him for staying in power so long.
Following the remarks, the Latin American community in Miami immediately began protests and calls for Guillen's firing came from various community groups. Instead, the Marlins decided to only suspend Guillen for five games.
In the off season, the Marlins signed Guillen to a four year $10 million contract. Now, the firestorm surrounding Guillen's comments has caused a furor in only his first few games as manager.
