The New York Yankees have been linked to San Diego Padres' third baseman, Chase Headley, for quite a while now. However, as the Yankees are now desperately seeking offense, after making the call to San Diego, the Padres turned down any chance of trading Headley as they are considering him "untouchable".
The Yankees are in need of offense and a third basemen which is why, as Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports, the Bombers inquired on the versatile infielder, who can also play first base. Yes, Alex Rodriguez is expected to make a comeback on Monday, but he's not the same A-Rod who could carry a team offensively. Headley could have fixed numerous problems for the Yankees. First, he would balance out the lineup as Ichiro, Brett Gardner, Robinson Cano, Travis Hafner and Lyle Overbay are all left-handed hitters. Then, as mentioned earlier, the Yankees could use some help at first base as they are looking to platoon Overbay. However, Headley could have taken command at first base since he's an everyday player.
Heyman pointed out that the Yankees don't have the right prospect to attract the Padres' attention. The Padres want top prospects or players that will blow their mind away as Headley looks to be the cornerstone of the franchise.
The Padres seem willing to give up anybody, except for Headley. The Yankees could inquire about Jedd Gyorko. He's a low-key second baseman, providing solid numbers in 63 games played this season. Gyorko is naturally a third baseman, but that's the positioned manned by Headley in San Diego, who has a triple slash of .272/.330/.440 with eight home runs, 25 RBI and 36 runs scored. He is 24 years old and doesn't become a free agent until 2019. Gyorko at least fits the Yankees' plan for inexpensive players, young players. This is his rookie season and if those numbers are a sign of things to come, the Gyorko will be one of the best second basemen or third basemen in the game.
The Yankees have until July 31 to figure out who they want to get and who they are willing to move.
Is there anybody you would like to see the Yankees go after before the trade deadline arrives?
