The Dallas Cowboys have been unsuccessful under the coaching of head coach Jason Garrett. Since assuming the position he has an overall record of 21-19, with two consecutive seasons in which the team has went 8-8.
The assumption by critics is that Garrett's job status is in jeopardy. There's this belief that if Garrett can lead the Cowboys to the playoffs, then he keeps his job. But if the Cowboys miss the playoffs for the fourth straight year, Garrett will have to ride off into the sunset and he'll be replaced.
However, owner Jerry Jones claims that is not the case during his press conference to kick off the start of training camp.
"It's a mistake" to think that, Jones said. "That's not right."
Jones used Garrett's time spent mentoring and working with Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo as a point of emphasis, saying their relationship is something the organization needs to take advantage of.
"If you're in close here, you see how Jason is responding to obviously unsatisfactory times," Jones said. "And I can tell you first hand, that's impressive. I like that, as far as looking ahead to the future. It is very good."
Jones went on to clarify that this isn't "an Armageddon year" for Garrett as he enters his third year of a four-year contract.
"Everything I'm thinking about is not only about how to beat the Giants when we open up but also what our future is in a plus manor or a positive way, with Jason," Jones said. "I look to the future with Jason. And not just through his contract that we're sitting here with right now. He's got a couple of years left on his contract. That's not a thought."
