New York Jets rookie quarterback Geno Smith doesn't think much about his competition with Mark Sanchez as he believes he has a "great shot" at taking the starting job as the two battle for the position this week in training camp, according to the New York Post.
"I'm prepared,'' Smith told the Charleston (W. Va.) Gazette on Saturday. "I'm just getting better daily. I've improved so much from the time the [Pinstripe Bowl] ended [in December] to now. I continue to improve steadily.
"I feel like I have a great shot [at winning the job]. I did a pretty good job overall of just adapting to the system and playbook and felt very comfortable with it by the end of [organized team activities] and mandatory minicamp [in June]."
Sanchez is still considered to hold the upper hand for the starting job, largely due to Smith's performance in minicamp, but the competition is still considered open going in the Jets' reporting day Thursday in Cortland.
Previous reports indicate that Sanchez also has intentions of being under center come the start of the season:
"I don't really think like that. I'm planning on playing, and planning on starting so I'll let you know,'' said Sanchez when he was asked if he would be surprised if he didn't start. "I don't plan on that happening.
"I feel the best I've felt in a while and I feel like I'm putting together one of my best offseasons," he said. "Accuracy-wise I just feel great.''
