NY Jets Rumors: Austin Collie, Laurent Robinson Work Out as Santonio Holmes Unsure of Return, Wide Receivers Key to Mark Sanchez, Geno Smith Success

The biggest question for the New York Jets outside of their starting quarterback drama is who will fill out the wide receivers corps. In the offseason, the Jets parted ways with Dustin Keller and Braylon Edwards in the offseason, leaving the offensive fire power low. Santonio Holmes is recovering from last year's Lisfranc injury and is unknown for training camp, leaving the Jets to look towards free agency from some relief.

ESPN reports both Austin Collie and Laurent Robinson were present at Jets' facilities for workouts. Both players would be extremely welcome additions to the Jets' depleted wide receiving corps. In 41 games, Collie caught 172 passes for 1,839 yards and 16 touchdowns. Robinson is a six-year veteran with an up and down career. In 2011 with the Dallas Cowboys, he put up 858 yards and 11 touchdowns.

If both prove healthy, the Jets will likely sign both as the overall health of Holmes is still unknown. The team's leading wide receiver was put on injured reserve last season after just four games. Holmes does not have any kind of target date for his return according to the New York Daily News. He is not looking to rush things and jeopardize further injury.

"It's just getting back into the swing of walking and running without any pains from having scar tissue build up around the injury," Holmes said. "It's really difficult to learn how to walk again. To do so much balance work, you don't realize what you have until it's gone. To lose a ligament and have separation in your joints, have screws placed in."

At this moment heading into training camp, Jeremy Kerley is the most reliable receiver on the roster. The third-year receiver took on a heavier load last season, putting up 827 yards and two touchdowns. That will not be enough for someone poised to be a leading receiver. Stephen Hill is the other strong option, but again his one year with the team is not enough to determine if he is top-quality material.

The Jets are in desperate need for more offensive weapons if they want their quarterback, whoever it will be, to succeed. Mark Sanchez has noticed the lacking of big time threats, once noting that he did not even know any of the names of the receivers on the team. He laughed telling media teammates were making up nicknames for them. Expect the Jets to sign at least one free agent, if not both.
