The Sacramento Kings have gone through plenty of changes lately. There is now a new ownership group in place along with a new coaching staff set. The Kings' young star DeMarcus Cousins has remained relatively mum on the entire ordeal especially as trade rumors swirled around him. However, as Cousins gets a second chance with the Team USA basketball, he is ready for a second chance with Sacramento and is excited to be there.
"I do want to be a King," Cousins said. "I do. I'm super excited where this franchise is headed. I'm glad to be a part of it."
During an interview with the Sacramento Bee, Cousins reiterated the fact that he is happy to be with the growing franchise. The Kings have often referred to Cousins as a cornerstone athlete to build around, but his relationship with the team has seen its ups and downs. His off and on the court antics have led to suspensions and fallouts with coaches. But, Cousins is ready for all of that to be put behind him.
Cousins spoke to media while attending a Team USA basketball mini-camp in Las Vegas. The young star thanked the coaching staff for inviting him out there and downplayed the idea that he was trying to force a trade from the Kings. He even spoke on the idea that he has been watching the play of Tyson Chandler and wants to be the best big on the team.
Also at the camp was Cousins' former coach John Calipari who is well-aware of Cousins' troubles in the NBA. Calipari revealed to ESPN that playing for Team USA is the best thing for Cousins' career and he has been attempting to counsel his former player on how to handle himself at the camp.
"If you want to make the Team USA roster next summer, you make everybody better or you're not making the team," Calipari said.
He is hoping that Cousins takes hold of the opportunity to play for something bigger than himself. Cousins has had a rollercoaster three years in the NBA after looking like one of the most promising young talents in college. Cousins is entering a contract year with Sacramento. If he does not sign a new extension by the start of November, he will become a restricted free agent next summer. Cousins insists that is far from his mind.
