The New York Jets have a depleted wide receiving corps and with two shaky quarterbacks, that could be the worst situation for the team outside of preventing butt fumbles. The team sent most of their passing threats packing last season, leaving the team with a lot of inexperienced and their No. 1 guy, Santonio Holmes, injured and uncertain of a return. With that, the Jets are bringing back former wide receiver Braylon Edwards.
Edwards and the Jets just cannot seem to let go of each other. Pending the result of the physical he is taking at Jets facilities on Wednesday, the New York Daily News reports Edwards will suit back up for the Gang Green for at least training camp. If he proves to still be a strong target, Edwards will likely be one of the Jets' best options until Holmes returns.
This is Edwards third stint with the Jets. The first began when he was traded from the Cleveland Browns in 2009 and ended after 2010. His second stint with the team was last season after being dropped by the Seattle Seahawks. Edwards' best season with the team came in 2010 where he recorded 904 yards and seven touchdowns.
While Edwards recent numbers are not impressive, especially pairing them with knee surgery the wide receiver had in 2011, but the current Jets' receiving corps might be worse. At this point their best target is Holmes and he is currently sitting on the physically unable to perform list while recovering from a Lisfranc injury.
Holmes has not made a timetable for when he will be putting on pads again. He could technically come off the PUP list at anytime during camp, but Holmes is in no hurry, not wanting to risk further injury. He has said it is difficult to get back into the swing of things, having to basically learn to re-walk again.
At this moment heading into training camp, Jeremy Kerley is the most reliable receiver on the roster. The third-year receiver took on a heavier load last season, putting up 827 yards and two touchdowns. That will not be enough for someone poised to be a leading receiver. Stephen Hill is the other strong option, but again his one year with the team is not enough to determine if he is top-quality material.
Whoever is suiting up for the quarterback spot in 2013 will need wide receivers to help them out. With turnovers a major issue for the Jets, having a reliable group will be a key to success.
