NY Jets Rumors: Santonio Holmes Possibly Out for Season, Braylon Edwards to Start as Rex Ryan Concerned Over Wide Receiver Group

The New York Jets could be in some trouble. The team has been counting on the return of a healthy Santonio Holmes to anchor the wide receiver corps that might be the biggest work in project outside of naming a starting quarterback. After suffering a foot injury that cost him part of last season, Holmes might not see the field this year either.

The New York Post reports Holmes is uncertain on whether or not he will return for the 2013-14 season. When asked by media if he will be on the field at all this year, all Holmes would say was, "I can't answer the question." So now, things have gone from possibly missing training camp, so possibly missing the entire year.

"I want to play, but I have to do what the foot says to do," Holmes said. "If it's not ready to roll, it's not ready to roll."

Holmes is currently sitting on the physically unable to perform list and is only riding a stationary bike during practice while also doing workouts with the trainer. Head coach Rex Ryan recognizes the urgency to get Holmes healthy to start the season off.

"There's always a concern. I feel confident that we will have him. When that is I'm not sure but I feel confident that he'll be out there," Ryan said.

Holmes is trying to remain positive throughout his rehab. He has taken part in some running, but continues to stress to the media that he is basically learning to walk again after two surgeries. With the Jets receiving corps extremely thin already, the team could be in much worse shape than originally anticipated.

New York did sign receiver Braylon Edwards prior to training camp beginning. If Edwards is healthy, the team will lean on him heavily during the absence of Holmes. This is Edwards' third stint with the Jets. The first began when he was traded from the Cleveland Browns in 2009 and ended after 2010. His second stint with the team was last season after being dropped by the Seattle Seahawks. Edwards' best season with the team came in 2010 where he recorded 904 yards and seven touchdowns. He showed up in new form, having dropped 13 pounds in the offseason.

"I didn't come here in a role where I'm going to help, I came here to start. And if that's not the case then I'm going to do all that I can," Edwards told reporters.

Edwards is already talking like he is the starting wide receiver which is good attitude to have considering he might be.
