The Atlanta Braves host the St. Louis Cardinals in the final game of the series. The Red Birds will attempt to salvage the series as the Bravos have won both games behind terrific pitching. Check out the live stream, but first, let's look at the matchups and what each team brings to Turner Field for ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball Game.
Friday it was Mike Minor and Saturday it was Julio Teheran who shut down the mighty Cardinals' offense. Combined, the two starters have only allowed one earned run in 14 innings pitched. That's all that baseball's fourth best RBI team has been able to manage off Braves' pitching this series.
Many are calling this a playoff preview as the Cardinals and Braves are atop of their respective divisions. For Kris Medlen just call it playoff redemption in a regular season game. Medlen will take the hill against the Cardinals for the first time since being charged for the loss in the 2012 N.L. Wild Card Game. He will face them once again in Turner Field and though the game doesn't mean further advancement in the playoffs, it would really help a struggling Medlen get back on track.
Medlen is 6-10 with a 3.78 ERA in 2013. He's lost three straight decisions, while allowing 14 earned runs in 14.1 innings pitched. Truly unlike the 2012 Medlen Braves fans saw dominate baseball. He will be opposed by a 2013 N.L. Rookie of the Year candidate, Shelby Miller. Never mind that the Cardinals are missing one of this generation's most dominant pitchers, Chris Carpenter, Miller has taken advantage of his chance to impress at the major league level. MIller is 10-6 with a 2.77 ERA in 2013. He's coming off a dominant start against the Philadelphia Phillies where he pitched six scoreless innings.
Can the Braves manage to sweep baseball's best team? Can the Cardinals avoid the sweep and keep their 1.5-game lead over the 2nd place Pittsburgh Pirates?
