Brian Banks is finally getting a shot at a professional football career and early reports are promising for the now Atlanta Falcons linebacker. Banks was once a highly touted high school prospect who has committed to playing at USC. Before reporting to school, Banks was falsely accused of rape, a conviction that landed him in prison for five years. Now, released and given a second chance at football, Banks is making the most of every minute in Atlanta.

Having not played organized football for over 10 years, Banks admitted to having plenty of rust to shake off when training camp first began. Clearly emotional before his first practice, Banks dropped to his knees and prayed before taking the field before the first day of training camp.

"I was definitely giving praise to God," Banks said. "I was getting on my knees and thanking him and asking for that strength. I felt good. It was good to be back for day one of game. There's a lot of work to be done."

Linebackers coach Glenn Pires is in charge of the development of Banks and so far, Pires believes the 28-year-old is right what he should be.

"I think he's taken advantage of the offseason," Pires said. "He's progressing well like all of the other young guys. I think he's going to have the opportunity. He had a good offseason. He works hard. He's very conscientious and ready to compete when we get ready for the preseason game."

Currently listed as a middle linebacker, Banks will look towards several Falcons veteran for advice throughout training camp. Sean Wetherspoon and Stephen Nicholas are back are ready to lead the position group. Both players missed workouts during OTAs in order to rehab injuries, but are back at full health and aim to guide Banks in his transition into the NFL.

The Falcons' linebacker group is not overly crowded. At this point, Akeem Dent is likely the starter at middle linebacker. Banks is playing behind Dent, covering running backs out of the backfield. Throughout the first few days of training camp, Banks has made several key hits during 7-on-7 drills.

Banks is already a fan-favorite in Atlanta. His story is one of the better offseason headlines of the year. Banks has seen time at multiple positions so far during training camp, giving him a better shot at making the team. While he is not likely to be named a starter, if he continues to impress in camp, Banks is a lock for the final 53-man roster.
