The Biogenesis scandal finally came to a head on Monday as 13 players were suspended for 50-games and Alex Rodriguez was suspended for 211 games, although he is expected to appeal and both Jesus Montero and Jordany Valdespin got 50-games but can serve them this year as they are on 40-man rosters.
According to Hardball Talk, five minor league players will serve their suspensions into 2014, as they are not on major rosters and since the minor leagues have about 30 games left, they will finish them next season. The report says that Mets outfielder Cesar Puello, Astros reliever Sergio Escalona, Yankees outfielder Fernando Martinez, reliever Jordan Norberto and reliever Fautino De Los Santos will serve 50-games into next season, as each of the players has about 28 games left this year.
Playoff games can also count and Puello, Escalona and Martinez will miss out on the first weeks of the 2014 season die to the length. Puello has no major league experience but he was having a solid season with 16 homers and 24 steals for Double-A Binghamton while hitting over .320 and the other four have all played some ball in the majors.
From the report: "The other four players all have major league experience. Escalona, who has been hurt this year, had allowed 11 runs in 15 innings for Double-A Corpus Christi. Martinez, who is always hurt, was at .325/.394/.554 with four homers in 83 at-bats for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after signing on with the Yankees in June."
