Darren McFadden might be the top running back for the Oakland Raiders, but there are some young guns behind him ready to take his place. As the veteran back enters the final year of his contract in Oakland, a few players a gearing up to take his spot should he not return next season. The Raiders might not have a lot of depth, but they have some talent at the running back spot that is turning some heads on the field.
Second-year running back Jeremy Stewart and rookie Deonte Williams are both getting a chance to show their talent while playing behind McFadden. Both players have been looking strong so far in training camp as head coach Dennis Allen plans on giving them an increased work load in the team's first preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys.
"I think it's huge for a number of young guys to get into these preseason games," coach Dennis Allen said. "This is where you really prove that you're worthy of a spot on this roster. I think next month will break a lot of these guys."
It is unclear exactly who will play backup with McFadden when the season begins. Rashad Jennings has been getting most of the work load behind the starter, but with Stewart and Williams hot on their tales, it is really anyone's game.
Stewart signed with the Raiders practice squad last season and was brought on after McFadden injured his ankle. Williams made his name at a small college in California, where he rushed for 1,547 yards and 12 touchdowns in his senior season. Both backs are down-field runners who thrive more running into tackles than around them. Neither are looking to remain a backup for long.
"Every player going into the league feels like he can play, but I definitely feel like I validated it," Stewart said. "I think I got into the groove and got the hang of the speed of the game. I feel like I have a lot more confidence going into this season and want to build on that."
With McFadden's inconsistent play, having quality depth at the running back position will be key for the Raiders. They will be looking to take some of the pressure off quarterbacks like Matt Flynn. While McFadden is still the best on the team, he has become more known for injuries and fumbles, leaving the possibility for others to take his spot.
