The New England Patriots lost several passing weapons in the offseason, which may turn out to be a non-issue in the long run. After the Patriots first preseason game, it was not Tom Brady's arm that stood out, but the running backs that proved to be the real threat for the team. After losing Danny Woodhead in the offseason, the Patriots traded pennies for LeGarrette Blount and are seeing the benefits immediately.
In the team's game against the Philadelphia Eagles, Blount rushed for 101 yards, including a 51-yard touchdown run that saw him reversing directions and shedding off tackles. His size and speed could be the secret weapon the Patriots have been looking for.
"LeGarrette ran for however many yards, whatever it was, his rookie season," Belichick said Saturday in a conference call. "It's not like he hasn't performed well in this league before. We traded for a player that we thought was a good player. It's no shock he can run the ball. We all know that he did a nice job (Friday) night."
The Patriots gave up running back Jeff Demps for Blount and Belichick is pretty happy with the decision. He knew the former Oregon running back had talent that had yet to be seen on the field and in the right situation, he could really shine.
Blount spent most of his time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, splitting reps after the rise of Doug Martin. As a rookie, he rushed for 1,007 yards and six touchdowns. Belichick said he believed there is great value in Blount and the team is thrilled to have him.
Blount's roster spot is still not totally secure. Stevan Ridley is likely the team's number one running back and rightfully so. Shane Vereen and Leon Washington also remain in the mix. Blount is likely competing with Brandon Bolden on the team. After Friday's game, Blount clearly has the edge and the coach's favor. Bolden is coming off of offseason surgery and that could hurt his chances to stay on.
Blount is not shocked about his success on Friday. He knows his size and aggressive style of play give him a big advantage over other backs. His 250-pound body is a threat to all defenders.
"I'm a big guy," Blount said. "I can't really get into how much I really weigh, but I'm a big dude. I feel like it's a lot more impressive when somebody my size does it compared to when somebody smaller does it."
