Oakland Raiders Training Camp: Tyler Wilson Not impressing, Matt McGloin Poised for Matt Flynn Backup Role After Dennis Allen Upset Over Accuracy with Rookies

The quarterback competition in Oakland has shifted from the starting job to the backup job. The team will likely select just three quarterbacks to bring into the regular season and right now have four options to decide from. As Matt Flynn cements himself as a starter and Terrelle Pryor works as a situational guy, Tyler Wilson and Matt McGloin are left to battle it out. Wilson was originally in position for the starting job, but now he is simply fighting to make the team.

Wilson was the hot hand in offseason work outs. He looked poised with a strong arm and good decision making skills. However, since training camp began he has seen a fall from grace with the team. With each practice, the fourth-round draft pick continues to lose snaps to undrafted rookie, Matt McGloin.

"There's still just a little inconsistency there as far as accuracy issues," Raiders coach Dennis Allen said, via SFGate.com. "He had some issues (Friday) just understanding where the protection was coming from. He's a rookie. Like a lot of rookies, he still has a long way to go and Tyler's continuing to work, and I think it's a good competition we have there between him and McGloin."

That is not exactly the competition the Raiders were planning on having. McGloin appears to be exceling after his time working with former New England Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O' Brian who later became the head coach at Penn State. He ran a similar offensive system there that the Raiders now run. Wilson does not appear to have the same experience.

Wilson's biggest issues are with accuracy. The quarterback was not overly impressive in his preseason debut, while Matt McGloin looked to be the strong option for a backup role. If the Raiders only take one rookie, McGloin has the upper hand.

The decision in Oakland will eventually be which quarterback gets cut? Flynn is "the man" right now in the Bay Area. Pryor is giving him a run for his money, but at the moment it appears he might only see the field in read-option situations. The fight comes down to Flynn and Wilson. Both will garner nothing in a trade and may not clear waivers. If Wilson continues to slide, his future could get pretty murky.
