Brandon Beachy is looking to continue his comeback after undergoing Tommy John surgery as the Atlanta Braves aim to further their lead in the NL East with a win over the New York Mets. Atlanta had a 15 ½ game lead in the division before going 6-3 in their following nine games, ending with taking two of three games from the division's second-place team, the Nationals.
Beachy has been red hot since returning, going 2-0. He now has a 1.29 ERA in those two outings. He is trying to help the Braves continue a streak that has seen the team win the last 19 of 22 games. However, their track record against the Mets has been spotty at best. Atlanta has dropped five of eight games to New York, splitting its 14 games on the season. However, Atlanta has won its first seven games away from home so they could have the road advantage.
Zack Wheeler will take the mound for the Mets in hopes of cooling the Braves down. Wheeler is 5-2 with a 3.43 ERA on the season. The rookie continues to put together quality outings, giving up just one run in the past two games. He has struck out a career-high 12 batters against San Diego and looks to continue improving.
Wheeler made his major-league debut against the Braves back on June 18 where he shut them out over six innings. The right-hander did not fare so well against the team on July 25 where he gave up four runs over six innings. Beachy last faced the Mets on Sept. 18, 2011 where he did not get the decision.
