AC Milan held PSV Eindhoven to a draw at the Philips Stadion, while Champions League regulars Lyon face a tough task after going down 2-0 to Real Sociedad at home in the first leg of the Champions League playoffs.
In other games, Celtic were shocked by Kazakhstan side Shakhter Karagandy 2-0, while Zenit St. Petersburg cruised to a 4-1 result over Pacos de Ferrerira. Viktoria Plzen hold the upperhand over Maribor after winning their first leg at home.
Milan opened the scoring in Eindhoven in the 15th minute, nodding home off a cross from Ignacio Abate. However, the Italian side failed to capitalize on the early lead, allowing PSV back into the game and the tie when Tim Matavz headed in after Christian Abbiati spilt a strike from Jeffrey Bruma.
At the Stade de Gerland, Frenchman Antoine Griezmann, who supported Lyon as a boy, opened the scoring in the 17th minute before Haris Seferovic made it 2-0 to the Spanish side five minutes into the second half with a long-range effort which found a way past goalkeeper Anthony Lopes.
The biggest upset of the night came when Karagandy took a sizeable 2-0 lead going into the second leg against the Scottish champions.
The hosts took the lead via Andrei Finonchenko, with the skipper heading in at the far post after a long throw was flicked on from the near post.
Finonchenko was again involved in the second goal, scored in the 77th minute, with the Karagandy player seeing his shot blocked by Steven Muoyokolo, only for Gediminas Vicius to find Sergei Khizhnichenko to head beyond Celtic goalkeeper Fraser Forster.
The most impressive side of the night was Zenit, who pretty much sealed progress with a 4-1 thrashing of Pacos in Portugal.
The Russians had Roman Shirokov to thank, with the midfielder netting a hat-trick to help his side to the brink of the Champions League group stages.
Viktoria Plzen take a 3-1 advantage into the second leg courtesy goals from Marian Cisovsky, Vladimir Darida and Michal Duris with Ales Mejac scoring the consolation goal for Maribor.
