NFL Might Cancel Pro Bowl

Apr 26, 2012 05:09 PM EDT

The NFL may finally be cancelling the annual Pro Bowl game, after several years of lackluster performances by the NFL's top players.

According to sources with ESPN, the Pro Bowl is "dead on arrival" beyond 2013.

"No determination has been made yet about this season's game," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello told the AP. "We have been in discussions with the union about the future of the Pro Bowl."

Although the league may want to shelve the Pro Bowl, the players association may object to its cancellation.

"The Pro Bowl is an important tradition we are in talks with the league to improve and preserve the game for our players and fans," NFL Players Association president Domonique Foxworth said.

According to the report, several solutions have been discussed between the NFL and the player association, however nothing looks promising.

Since many of the players' contract have clauses giving bonuses for Pro Bowl appearances, the Pro Bowl balloting process will likely go forward in order to satisfy the contracts in place.
