On Thursday night, the New York Jets drafted Quinton Coples in the first round of the NFL draft.
Coples was a reach at the Jets' number 16 pick, with draft experts predicting that Coples would go at the end of the first round.
Coples has great physical attributes and starred at North Carolina as defensive end recording 59 tackles and 10 sacks last year.
However, scouts question Coples' work ethic and ability to give 100% on every play which is essential for defensive ends in the NFL who often need endless motors to get past bigger lineman and quick release quarterbacks.
"He could be an All-Pro but has bust potential written all over him," NFL Networks' Mike Mayock said of Coples.
The Jets have widely reported issues inside of the locker room and the team may not be the best place to develop a physical talent like Coples who comes with question marks on his commitment.
It will be up to head coach Rex Ryan to get Coples to put in the work necessary to be a top NFL player.
The Jets drafted Coples because the team is in desperate need of a pass rusher.
At the number 16 pick, the only pass-rusher taken was a first round reach with Bruce Irvin going to the Seattle Seahawks.
The Jets had their pick of pass rushers with Melvin Ingram, Courtney Upshaw, and Chandler Jones. Any of these players would have been a safer choice.
In conclusion, in reaching for Coples in the first round who may not be the best fit for the Jets' locker room, the Jets receive a grade of "F" for the first round of the NFL draft.
