NBA News: Tracy McGrady Announces Retirement From NBA

Aug 27, 2013 12:05 AM EDT

During Monday's episode of ESPN's "First Take", seven-time All-Star Tracy McGrady announced his retirement from the NBA, but hasn't ruled out the possibility of playing overseas.

"It's been 16 years playing the game I love. I've had a great run, but it's time for it to come to an end," McGrady said.

McGrady averaged 19.6 points, 5.6 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game in a career that started in 1997, when he was drafted out of high school.

After his time with the Toronto Raptors, McGrady spent the past four seasons bouncing around different teams. In February 2010, he was traded from the Rockets to the New York Knicks, where he finished out that season. Then he signed one-year deals the Detroit Pistons to the Atlanta Hawks and finally to the San Antonio Spurs, though he did not play a single regular-season game in 2012-13.

McGrady joined the Spurs in April after working his way back from injuries but never got on the floor for a team that made a run to the Finals.

McGrady also told "First Take" that he still believes he can play and expressed how disappointed he felt not getting a chance to help the Spurs in the Finals.

"When we were in the Finals and Manu [Ginobili] was struggling, I felt I could contribute, absolutely," McGrady said.

He later acknowledged the agreement he and the Spurs came to terms with, where it was understood by management who informed him that he was an insurance policy and likely wouldn't play.

When asked to clarify whether he is considering playing in China, McGrady said: "Officially retired from the NBA. Door's still open."
