The St. Louis Cardinals face their division rival Cincinnati Reds and they will be going for the sweep Wednesday evening. A victory would be huge for the Reds, a sweep would be ideal for the now first-place Cardinals. Check out the live stream and pitching matchups for today's game.
Attempting to hold the Red Birds will be Reds' righty, Homer Bailey, who's 8-10 with a 3.71 ERA through 26 starts this season. He is 2-0 in the month of August and is coming off of a decent starts against the Milwaukee Brewers. He went 1-0 in two games, pitching 14 innings, allowing four earned runs, while striking out 13 and walking three. Those numbers have been great compared to what Bailey has done against the Cardinals this season.
Early on in the year, the Cardinals handed Bailey two losses in his first six starts of the year. He went five innings, allowing seven earned runs on April 10 and then lost to St. Louis about a month later at Busch Stadium. He gave up four earned runs on nine hits over 5.1 innings pitched. The Cardinals haven't been Bailey's favorite team.
A fearless Adam Wainwright will take the hill for the Cardinals and he will look to close out the month of August with another dominant performance. He's won two consecutive games after allowing a total of two earned runs in both games. He went seven innings against the Chicago Cubs and then pitched a complete game against baseball's best, the Atlanta Braves, to get the Cardinals rolling.
The Reds were 2.5 games from first place, but the Cardinals have pushed them back to 4.5 games in the N.L. Central. The Cardinals pitching is dangerous, while the Reds have a pretty decent offense.
Will the Reds get swept and ultimately be 5.5 games behind the Cardinals or will they step things up and avoid the sweep?
