The Texas Tech Red Raiders are coming into the season with high expectations and plenty of excitement after hiring Kliff Kingsbury as their new head coach during the offseason and now they will open the year against SMU, who is looking to snap a 14-game losing stream against the Red Raiders, their fellow Texas football team.
The Red Raiders had one of the most high powered offenses in the country under former head coach Tommy Tuberville and now that quarterback Seth Doege and his consecutive 4,000 yard seasons are gone, the team will turn to freshman quarterback Baker Mayfield to get things going and after coaching Johnny Manziel last season, Kingsbury will be ready to push him in the offense. The team went 20-17 over the past three seasons with Tubberville and now they move on with Kingsbury.

SMU comes in with June Jones as head coach once again and after leaving Hawaii he has helped turn the team completely around, taking them to four bowl games and winning three and now the team will be playing in the American Athletic Conference, which was previously Conference USA and while they will be ready to play Texas Tech, they will have to replace one of their best players in Zach Line, who is now with the Minnesota Vikings and is up against the 53-man roster deadline.
Kingsbury has no experience as a head coach, but he was a fantastic quarterback for the Red Raiders back in the day and he also helped along Manziel while he was coaching at Texas A&M last season and the school appears to very excited about the new hire. The game will be on at 8 pm and can be checked out on Watch ESPN online and also on the radio.
Last season SMU went 7-6 on the season and 5-3 in their conference and Line led the team with nearly 1,300 rushing yards and they will need to make up for the production. Texas Tech opens the season with SMU before playing SF Austin and then they have a tough game against TCU, which will also air on ESPN. Their team plays Texas State next and some of the tougher games down on the schedule in the season include at West Virginia, at Oklahoma, and home against Oklahoma State before playing Kansas State Baylor and then finishing with a road game against Texas.
