Tony Moeaki Rumors: Oakland Raiders, Miami Dolphins, Packers or Baltimore Ravens Option For Tight End After Chiefs Release?

Sep 01, 2013 05:10 PM EDT

The Kansas City Chiefs are expecting to have an improved offense after bringing in new head coach Andy Reid and with Alex Smith now at quarterback and Jamaal Charles in the backfield, things should be more consistent than in 2012, but losing tight end Tony Moeaki to a shoulder injury and then a release could have a big effect on that.

According to ESPN.com, Moeaki was released after fracturing his shoulder in the final preseason game against the Steelers during the final 53-man cut downs and now the team will move forward with Anthony Fasano and Travis Kelce after signing Fasano in free agency and drafting Kelce. Moeaki was looked at as a potential playmaker on offense, but after missing all of 2011 he caught just 33 passes for 453 yards last year and now will be looking for a new home.

The Chiefs initially thought that Moeaki's injury was not that serious and Michael Bush previously played with a similar injury and instead of placing the tight end on injured reserve, they decided to cut him. Moeaki was an excellent option for the team in 2010 after making nearly 50 catches for 566 yards and three scores and now he will have to come back from yet another injury. He played 15 games last season but did not produce and after going just 2-14 the Chiefs look like they will be a very improved team under Reid.

Fasano was signed due to the uncertainty with Moeaki coming back from an injury and now that moves looks like a stroke of genius. Moeaki looked good heading into the preseason but now he is done and there was a good chance he would miss most of the season if they kept him. The Raiders could be a nice fit for Moeaki since they have players like Nick Kasa and Mychal Rivera on the roster and they could sign him and wait until he recovers. Other options include the Dolphins after losing Dustin Keller as well as the Ravens, who lost Dennis Pitta to a serious injury.
