The Green Bay Packers likely won't need a backup quarterback this season as long as Aaron Rodgers is healthy and after cutting BJ Daniels, the only other QB on their roster, the team brought in Seneca Wallace, who recently parted ways with the San Francisco 49ers.
According to Pro Football Talk, Wallace signed with the Packers after they released Daniels and it could be a strategic move, as Green Bay opens with the 49ers in Week 1. The Packers also signed former 49ers quarterback Scott Tolzien to their practice squad and now both him and Wallace can help the defense in practice with looks for the 49ers offense. It is unclear whether either quarterback will remain after Week 1 as the backup for Rogers, but head coach Mike McCarthy could decide to add another player down the line, maybe even someone like Tim Tebow.
Wallace previously parted ways with the 49ers after feeling they signed him to get backup Colt McCoy to take a pay cut and then there were reports that he was retiring. The 33-year-old will not be with the Packers at least for a week or two and he didn't play last season after being a longtime backup in Seattle and Cleveland and he could be an interesting quarterback for teams to have around, as he could mimic mobile quarterbacks for defenses to work with in practice.
Wallace is very athletic for anyone that remembers his amazing play at Iowa State when he was still in college and he could be a Robert Griffin like stand in for defenses on a number of teams if the Packers cut him loose.
"I've been around this game long enough where I can see what's going on," Wallace told the Des Moines Register, "and I realized right away the reason they brought me here was to get Colt to take a pay cut."
