The Boston Red Sox have continued to play very well in September as they lead the American League East, defeating the Detroit Tigers with an offensive flurry 20-4 after hitting eight home runs at Fenway Park.
David Ortiz set some personal milestones and hit two home runs while also adding a double that went down as his 2,000th career hit and third baseman Will Middlebrooks hit a grand slam to power the Red Sox past the playoff-bound Tigers, who were playing without Miguel Cabrera once again. Cabrera likely won't get the Triple Crown despite putting up numbers better than he did last season, but the Tigers primary concern is getting him healthy for the postseason.
The Sox got power from Stephen Drew, Mike Napoli, Jacoby Ellsbury and Daniel Nava to lay the smack down on the Tigers and Ryan Dempster clearly had enough behind him after allowing four runs in the game and the team now has only lost two of their last 11 games. The team plays the Yankees starting on Thursday and the team has gotten themselves into the wild card race, something the Sox could mess with very much if they win more than two games.
The Tigers couldn't get anything going despite a home run from Prince Fielder and now both teams will be looking to improve as they head to the postseason. The Red Sox are up six games on the Rays and have the AL East nearly locked up.
