Canelo Record: KO's, Wins, Losses and Key Victories in the Mexican Boxer's Resume

Sep 11, 2013 02:03 PM EDT

Saul "Canelo" Alvarez is hitting the big stage, fighting one of the sport's biggest athletes this Saturday as he confronts the biggest challenge in his career. Canelo is 23 years old, but has had his share of fights, bring eight years of experience to the ring against Floyd Mayweather Jr. Here's his boxing record as, like Mayweather Jr., Canelo will enter Saturday's bout with a perfect record.

Canelo is 42-0-1 in his career as a professional boxer. He turned pro back in 2005 at the age of 15, fighting exclusively in Mexico until 2008, when Canelo fought his first fight outside of his native country. Canelo started his career winning 22 of his first 23 fights before his first bout in the U.S. He fought Larry Mosley in California, going the distance and winning by unanimous decision in 10 rounds.

It's clear by his record and list of opponents that Canelo has yet to fight real contenders. His toughest fights were against "Sugar" Shane Mosley and Austin Trout. Both fighters took the Mexican 12 rounds with Canelo winning the bouts by unanimous decisions. Canelo last faced Trout on April 20 of this year, meaning Mayweather Jr. will be his second opponent of the year.

Canelo boasts heavy hooks and a hard straight right. His biggest problems when fighting Mayweather Jr. will obviously be making contact. At 36, Mayweather Jr. is still agile, bobbing and weaving under hard blows that never land or glance off his shoulders. Canelo has the height advantage, but he'll need speed in this fight.
