NBA Rumors: Jason Terry Laughs Off JR Smith Claim New York Knicks Win Championship, Predicts Deron Williams MVP Season with Brooklyn Nets

Sep 11, 2013 04:05 PM EDT

The war of words continues between the Brooklyn Nets and the New York Knicks. The two teams have been warned by David Stern that the rivalry needs to be toned down, but that has not stopped the players from taking shots at one another throughout the offseason. It all started when Paul Pierce said it was time for the Brooklyn Nets to own New York and went from there.

The recent battle came after Knicks guard J.R. Smith guaranteed the New York would win the NBA championship. Smith spoke during an event at Chelsea Piers that he was in fact "100 percent sure" the Knicks would take the title this year, ending the franchise's 40-year drought of a championship. Jason Terry simply laughs at that.

In an interview with Dime Magazine, Terry was asked what he thought about the Knicks' chances at winning a title in 2013. "Maybe the Rucker Park Championship. I don't know, not the NBA championship. I don't see how they could guarantee that, at all. I'm not buying it, so ... I mean, it's a bitter rivalry, you know it's going to be intense, and however they feel over there in that locker room they are guaranteed and entitled to feel that way but we don't want to see that happen on our watch."

Terry is not the only Brooklyn Net laughing over the claims from Smith. Forward Reggie Evans also responded with an "LOL" on Twitter when a fan asked him about the comments. However, both Evans and Terry are feeling great about Brooklyn's chances at getting into the title race after the team acquired heavy-hitters like Pierce and Kevin Garnett to enter into the starting lineup.

"We are going to kick butt and take names, and hopefully that's gonna end up in a championship," Terry said, via ESPN NewYork 98.7 FM. "I'm saying Deron Williams for MVP, with the pieces we have here."

Terry was not going to go as far as predicting a championship, but he did tell the magazine that the new unit would go out every night and play their absolute best. If they can do that successfully then a championship should not be out of reach for the team.

"Only thing I can predict is that we're going to go out every night and do all that we can, as a team, as a unit, as a [borough] of Brooklyn to go out and fight for that championship because that's all of our goals," Terry said. "And we're going to do whatever we can within our power to go after it."
