New York Jets Rumors: Geno Smith Could Remain Starter With Mark Sanchez Having The Option For Season-Ending Surgery

Sep 12, 2013 09:05 AM EDT

After visiting with Dr. James Andrews on Wednesday, quarterback Mark Sanchez plans to continue rehabbing his injured right shoulder though he has season-ending surgery as an option on the table. Sanchez will continue a "week-to-week evaluation" on his shoulder.

The Jets announced earlier this week that Sanchez would be seeking a second opinion on his injured shoulder and he indicated himself that he'll seek out multiple opinions.

"We're getting every opinion possible" Sanchez said earlier this week. "I don't think you can have too many like this and I think it's prudent."

If Sanchez opts for the surgery it all but assures that his career in a Jets uniform is over.

With the news of Sanchez's shoulder still developing, everything seems to point to rookie quarterback Geno Smith remaining the starter, possibly for the rest of the season.

Smith hardly played light-out in the Jets' season-opening victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, but even with a fumble and interception in the game he still led the team down the field to two fourth-quarter field goals.

Some positives of Smith being at quarterback are that he has the ability to run the ball giving him the option to make something out of a broken play. Compared to Sanchez, Smith has the ability to make more yards with his legs. He's not as elusive as say a Robert Griffin III or Michael Vick, but he does have the speed to salvage a play that has been broken.
