MLB Standings: Red Sox Sweep, Dodgers Stifled, Braves Struggle, Pirates & Cardinals Stuck

Sep 16, 2013 10:12 AM EDT

With just a little over 10 games remaining in the 2013 season, the MLB Standings are only getting more and more captivating. After a weekend of baseball there is still nobody ensured to make a playoff appearance. The Boston Red Sox had the most successful weekend of any of the top teams in baseball, but there is still work to be done. Here are the MLB Standings entering Monday as there are only two weeks of baseball remaining.

A.L. East: Boston Red Sox Lead 9.5 Games
Just when the New York Yankees season was somewhat making sense and the A.L. East seemed open, at least briefly, the Boston Red Sox slammed the door. With a three-game sweep of the Yankees, the Red Sox reminded everybody who was boss. They made sure Mariano Rivera was only present on the field for the pregame ceremony and in the bullpen in the bottom of the ninth. Make no mistake about it, if the Yankees make the playoffs, they will be the most dangerous team though they appear to not have the right parts to go deep into the postseason. The Yankees are now 12.5 games back in the A.L. East standings, officially eliminated from winning the division.

N.L. West: Los Angeles Dodgers Lead 10.5 Games
The Dodgers suffered a series loss to the San Francisco Giants. The two hooked up for a four-game series and the Giants whacked the Dodgers, taking the final three games. No need to know further details, but the Giants put a beating on the Dodgers, not allowing more than three runs in any of the games, while scoring a total of 29 runs. You do the math. The Dodgers now have a chance of taking matters into their own hands. They face the Arizona Diamondbacks and with two wins in this three-game series, the Dodgers can clinch the division.

N.L. East: Atlanta Braves Lead 10 Games
At this point, Braves fans are probably thinking the worst. They have turned off their televisions or slammed their phones on the grounds way too many times. However, with only 13 games left and the Chicago Cubs and Milwaukee Brewers on their schedule, the Braves are still safe. As a matter of fact, like the Dodgers, they can take matters into their own hands. They face the Washington Nationals three times in D.C. starting today.

N.L. Central: Pittsburgh Pirates, St. Louis Cardinals Tied for First
This division is giving baseball plenty to talk about. The Pirates and Cardinals are still dead locked at the top of the standings. There are only two weeks of baseball left! This should be one of the better finishes of any division as long as both teams continue playing great baseball.

Other Divisions:
A.L. West- The Oakland A's opened up a 6.5-game lead in the division after sweeping the Texas Rangers
A.L. Central-  The Detroit Tigers have been the definition of consistent. They continue to hold their ground, sitting five games up on the Cleveland Indians.
