Johnny Manziel is the most polarizing player in college sports for a number of reasons and one of the biggest is his style of play and the way he operates on the field and after putting up some amazing stats against Alabama last weekend, MMQB Writer Greg Bedard took a look at the quarterback and his NFL prospects.
According to the article by Bedard, Manziel is coming into the NFL at a perfect time and while scouts have said that his size is not ideal, the NFL that he is about enter is. The league is now moving more and more towards the college style of offense and with teams like the 49ers, Seahawks, Bills and most of all, the Eagles, running those types of offenses and being successful, there will be a place for Manziel in the league.
While he may not be the number one pick, Manziel has the skills and the throwing ability to make it in this league and he has already looked better as a pocket quarterback than he did last season while winning the Heisman trophy. Usually when Nick Saban plays a team, if someone goes for a big game, the next time they play they usually struggle, but after gaining over 300 yards on his own last season while defeating Alabama, this year Manziel was even better, gaining over 560 yards in the game on his own.
Manziel has been a beast against Alabama, the best team and defense in the nation, throwing for 464 yards and five touchdowns last week while also rushing for almost 100 yards. The Aggies are 2-1 and while they may not make the national championship, Manziel clearly has a place in the NFL, as many teams wouldn't mind having a player with those skills.
Workouts and how he performs the rest of the season will make a big impact on his draft position, but Bedard writes that despite his size, scouts are watching. Manziel could end up being the next Russell Wilson, a short quarterback that put up great numbers in college. Wilson is listed right around 6'0 and with Manziel slightly taller than that, Wilson will be the type that he is compared to the most.
Johnny Football can ball against Alabama, but can he do it in the NFL? Only time will tell.
