Cleveland Cavaliers center Andrew Bynum still hasn't been cleared for contact and therefore isn't expected to be ready for the Cavaliers opening training camp next week but that hasn't ruined coach Mike Brown's perception of him.
"He could very easily be the best center in the game" Brown said. "Not only the game today but he's skilled enough and has the rest of the tools to be one of the best ever."
Bynum is now running on treadmills but hasn't begun contact drills on the court Brown revealed Monday at the team's charity golf outing at Firestone Country Club. There's currently still no timetable for Bynum's return and no one in the organization rushing his after a strong history of lengthy knee complications.
"I'm not in any rush to get him back" Brown said. "Obviously it'd be great if he's here for opening day and practicing. If he's not I'm more than OK with it. We have a lot of guys capable of stepping up and playing or practicing until he is ready to go."
Cavs general managers Chris Grant said Bynum has continued to put his focus on being in the weight room and that he's making "significant progress" and is hopeful about the possibilities in the future.
"He's been more committed than most players I've seen over almost 20 years. He's really done a nice job" Grant said. "He's not there yet to where he's playing but he's starting to participate and do things at a level we're cautiously optimistic about. It's a day-to-day week-by-week process. He did miss all last year so we have to make sure we put him in a position to succeed and make sure we're cautious as we move into training camp and beyond."
