Eagles LT Jason Peters Tears Right Achilles Tendon for Second Time in as Many Months

Philadelphia Eagles LT, Jason Peters suffered his second tear in less than two months of his right Achilles tendon.

Peters suffered his initial tear on March 27 while training for the upcoming season.  At the time of the injury, it remained unclear if Peters would need to be placed on IR, which would make him unavailable for the entirety of the season and rule out a return for a potential playoff push.

The Pro Bowl T suffered his most recent injury on Monday while recovering from his first surgical procedure to correct the issue. A second surgery was made necessary and this set back all but guarantees him a spot on IR.

Reportedly, the cause of the incident was a malfunction of his medical equipment.  Peters was utilizing a Roll-A-Bout, a specialized scooter that allows recovering patients to continue "walking" with one leg while balancing the impaired limb on a rolling support, which broke while in use.  The result was the 6'4, 328 lbs. OT crashing to the floor.

The Eagles organization had been planning to be without Peters for the season's duration even before this most recent incident.  Immediately following his initial tear, they signed Demetress Bell to be their opening day starter at LT.  Like Peters, Bell is a former Buffalo Bill that landed in Philadelphia via the free agent market.

Losing a key offensive cog like Peters was obviously not the start that Eagles wanted or needed in 2012.  Coming off a season in which they were expected to compete for the Lombardi Trophy and failed to make the playoffs, Head Coach Andy Reid is arguably under more pressure than ever to deliver a contender to a city that has yet to win a Super Bowl title.

Whether the Eagles sink or swim in 2012, Peters isn't likely to be along for the rid
