The NBA is planning on giving the Miami Heat and the Brooklyn Nets the chance to wear nickname jerseys during one of their games this season according to ESPN.com, giving players like LeBron James and Kevin Garnett to express themselves.
The report from ESPN.com says that the NBA is "considering" giving the two teams the chance to put different names on their jerseys for one of their four matchups this season. The league has not confirmed this yet, but the report says the players know about it and while the two teams will be given the chance to do it, it's unclear for which game or if they would be allowed to do any other time.
On top of that, it's also unclear whether any other teams will be allowed to do so. Ray Allen is quoted in the story saying that he would likely use "Shuttlesworth", as in Jesus Shuttlesworth, who he played in the great Spike Lee film "He Got Game". Allen showed off his acting chops in that film and having him wear Shuttlesworth would be a very cool thing to witness.
Many players on both teams have nicknames already, including various ones for players like King James, The Truth and others, but likely most players would come up with something new. Many people call Dwyane Wade D-Wade, but that is pretty simple and he could go with another option. Shane Battier mentions in the article that not all names could be use, as he wanted to use "Batman". But can't because of the obvious rights and implications there.
Here is a look at some real ideas, some fake ones, some fictional ones and just some random ideas for nicknames. Some are for specific players, some are just for whatever:
The Kings
Cheerios (for KG)
Honey Nut (for KG as well)
The Flash (okay, that won't work either)
Three-Peat
Hashtag anything (Please don't players...you know someone will)
Boston Massacre
Trade Me!
The Last King
The Best
He Hate Me! (Yeah XFL!)
Ray Allen's will be best with Jesus Shuttlesworth
Obvious ones:
King James
KG
The Truth
Lights Out
D-Wade
