The New York Yankees have made the playoff every season for nearly the last 20 years apart from one and after losing on Wednesday to the Tampa Rays, that number is now at two, as the team was eliminated from postseason contention after suffering another defeat.
The news isn't all bad, as at least one silver lining keeps closer Mariano Rivera's career postseason save numbers at 42, but that is a small thing compared to the chance to play for the World Series. Last season the Yankees barely hung on to win the division and then defeated the Baltimore Orioles in the postseason before matching up with the Tigers, who went on to play against the Giants in the World Series, where they were swept out.

The Yankees dealt with a seemingly endless list of injuries during the season and along with the Alex Rodriguez situation, there was plenty of drama to go around and now the offseason will being plenty of new questions, including whether Robinson Cano is truly with 10 years and $300 million dollars. Those tough questions remain ahead for the Yankees, as does a decision on manager Joe Girardi, whose contract is up after the season ends.
Some have speculated that Girardi could head to a teams like the Washington Nationals or the Chicago Cubs if they have openings, but as of now that remains to be seen. Questions will come up about the health and future of Derek Jeter, as he went on and off the DL multiple times this season and now at his old age his future at shortstop could be up in the air.
Thursday's game in the Bronx is the final home game of the season for the Yankees and that means it is also the final home game for Mariano Rivera. Mo did not get the chance to pitch against the Rays in the first two games of the series and the last time he was on the mound was the day he was honored against the San Francisco Giants on Sunday. Rivera was celebrated in a pregame ceremony that saw him get presented with numerous gifts, including from both the Yanks and the Giants.
Rivera had his number retired in Monument Park, something that may have never happened before, as a player that was still active had his number retired. The Yankees didn't stop there either, as they presented him with a number of different gifts and they also had him leave the bullpen to come and speak to the live sounds of Metallica, who played his signature entrance song "Enter Sandman" from the outfield on a stage.
Rivera has been a classy player since day one and the way he has handled himself this season just shows why. On Sunday he gave an emotional and measured speech about how he feels about the fans and where he is now and he was very blessed to have his number retired. The family of Jackie Robinson was there on Sunday as well and Rivera now will get the chance to have his final game in the Bronx on Thursday night.
The game on Thursday will be the Yankees and Rays from the Bronx on the YES Network and will also be on CBS Radio. Check here for the MLB live streaming website or for more from the game from Sports World Report.
